Hōne Kapa

Meet The Carver

Carving is in my DNA. My ancestors were tōhunga—masters in the sacred art of carving wood, bone, and stone.

Hōne's Greeting

My carving journey began at Te Aute College in 1984, where my passion for toi Māori was first ignited. It was there, among the wairua of the kura, that I took my first steps into the world of whakairo-carving, starting humbly with cow bone.

From inspiration to creation, my carving process is a journey of discovery and craftsmanship.

The Carving Process

TeKapa carvings are designed to connect with the unique spirit of Aotearoa NZ creating a connection that and hand-carved pieces that carry a sound, wairua (spirit) and mauri (life force) from the whenua (land) that is unique to Aotearoa New Zealand.

Carving has become a lifelong pursuit striving to honour tradition, celebrate whakapapa, and continue to evolve with each unique piece created.
