Whānau Carved
A Kouma/breastplate is a significant traditional adornment, they hold historical significance and symbolise strength protection and leadership. Kouma were traditionally worn by chiefs and people of high status within the tribe. They are often worn on special occasions. the breastplate is one of the pieces of armour described in Paipera Tapu, worn for spiritual strength and courage.
At Te Kapa Carving, every creation is authentically carved, resonating with the wairua-spirit of the land. Our mahi-mahi flows in harmony with the whenua-land, reflecting the wairua and mauri of Aotearoa New Zealand.
